Here are a few guidelines about this. You have the following options for sharing your own images:

a) Use the attachment feature to upload directly from your harddrive.
b) Upload the image to your own Web space and then link to it here.

For option b), there are two ways to make it work:

1. Use the URL tag to create a link to your image inside the posted message.
2. Use the IMG tag to display the image inside the posted message.

Please note that option 1 is preferred and option 2 will generally not be allowed. First, if you display an image inside your post it takes longer for the page to load. This can discourage people from looking if the server is slow at that moment or they have a slow connection. Second, large inline images can screw up the display of the thread. Third, doing this will use your bandwidth every time someone loads a page here which can be quite a bit!

To share an image hosted elsewhere, the options are the same as 1. and 2. above. Please use option 1 and always link to an image using the URL tag and never use the IMG tag to link to an image on another website. That uses someone else's bandwidth every time you view the page here which is not proper.

Please let me know if you have any questions about these procedures. Thanks for your cooperation! :)

If the other image is hosted on a dedicated image-hosting site (for example, photobucket) whose purpose is to be linked by image tags, is this allowed?

Provided that the image is small enough to not mess up page formatting and slow down loading times, that is.

Photobucket encourages people to link to it with IMG tags, so I don't think bandwidth is an issue for them.

Sure, but no large inline images allowed. For example, a 640X480 image is way to big to place in a thread. Only someone with a large screen resolution could still read the text of the thread without scrolling. Keep them small or stick to links. Thanks!
